‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ Stumbles Out Of The Gate
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny couldn’t reclaim the franchise’s box office magic and opened to an underwhelming $60 million at the domestic box office in its opening weekend.
While that number was good enough to top the box office charts, the final number was on the lower side of projections.
Despite its underwhelming debut, Dial of Destiny racked in a decent amount of money for a film aimed at older audiences. The problem, however, is that the fifth Indiana Jones film had an astronomical production budget of $295 million. In order for the film to become profitable during its theatrical run, it will take a heroic effort by Indy.
Falling Short Of Crystal Skull
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny saw Harrison Ford don his iconic fedora for one last adventure. The film managed to earn $70 million at the international box office, bringing its global start to $130 million.
The film didn’t come close to matching its predecessor, 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which opened to $100 million at the domestic box office 15 years ago. Audiences, like critics, have been lukewarm on the new film, which currently holds a “B+” CinemaScore.
“This is a weak opening,” says David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research. “Most action-adventure series finish by episode five and that’s happening here.”
Competition on the Horizon
While Dial of Destiny will get a boost with Tuesday’s July 4th holiday, the film can only run unchallenged for so long. Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One will hit theaters on July 12 and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer will land on July 21. Both films have a similar target audience to Indy.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is in theaters now.
