This Day in Disney History- April 14
Welcome back to our continuing trip through the history of the Walt Disney Company. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- April 14.
April 14th was a big day in Disney history, with the reopening of a Disneyland classic, the death of a Disney Legend, and the groundbreaking for a major Star Wars land. So, let’s get started!
The Big Bad Wolf Released (1934)
On this day in 1934, the Disney Silly Symphony cartoon The Big Bad Wolf was released.
In the cartoon, The Three Little Pigs team up with Red Riding Hood to defeat the Big Bad Wolf.
Disneyland’s Easter Parade Held (1967)
On this day in 1967, Disneyland’s annual Easter Parade took place.
On hand for the festivities were Annette Funicello and the brand new Dapper Dans.
Alice in Wonderland Reopens (1984)
On this day in 1984, the newly updated Alice in Wonderland opened in Disneyland.
The attraction takes guests down the rabbit hole and into Wonderland, where they are guided by the Cheshire Cat.
Mickey’s Gift of Dreams Preview Held (2003)
On this day in 2003, a press preview was held for “Mickey’s Gift of Dreams”.
The special musical show was created to mark the 20th anniversary of Tokyo Disneyland.
The Wild Opens (2006)
On this day in 2006, The Wild opened in theaters.
The film starred Keifer Sutherland, Jim Belushi, Jeneane Garofalo, William Shatner and Richard Kind. It told the store of an adolescent lion named Ryan who is accidentally shipped from the New York Zoo to Africa.
Ollie Johnston Passes Away (2008)
On this day in 2008, Disney Legend Ollie Johnston passed away.
The legendary animator was the last surviving member of Walt’s “Nine Old Men”. During his 43[year career he worked on films including Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, The Fox and the Hound, and The Rescuers.
Thomas was also remembered for his work with fellow animator Frank Thomas, including their seminal book The Illusion of Life.
Special Agent Oso Debuts (2009)
On this day in 2009, Special Agent Oso debuted on the Disney Channel.
The new animated series starred a stuffed panda bear who doubles a secret agent.
Galaxy’s Edge Groundbreaking Takes Place (2016)
Finally, on this day in 2016, both Disneyland and Disney’s Hollywood Studios broke ground on Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.
The land would eventually open on both costs in 2019.
