Carl Fredrickson Returns For new ‘Dug Days: Carl’s Date’ Short Before ‘Elemental’
If you’ve been following along with MickeyBlog you’ve likely seen that Disney’s latest animated film Elemental will be coming out this Summer (2023.) This week we’re also getting more details about a new Up-inspired short film that will run before the film. ‘Carl’s Date’ is significant in that it is the last voice over performance the late Ed Asner made as Carl Fredrickson.
For those unfamiliar, ‘Carl’s Date’ falls under the Dug Days umbrella. Dug Days is a show of shorts on the Disney+ streaming network that is set immediately after the 2009 film Up. It follows the main character Dug (voiced by Bob Peterson) and 78 year-old Carl Fredrickson (Asner.) It was created, written and directed by Peterson, produced by Peterson and Kim Collins.
The series aired on September 1, 2021 and in December of 2022, plans for ‘Carl’s Date’ were announced.

According to a recent piece in ScreenRant, ‘Carl’s Date’ is a heartwarming finale that honors Asner’s (who passed away in August, 2021) legacy. The film is one final demonstration of the love that Carl has for his late wife Ellie, his bond with Dug and his promise to find a new adventure. ScreenRant calls the short “the perfect button on the entire story as he struggles to keep his promise while taking a step forward to find happiness once more.”
In the short Dug watches as Carl prepares for his first date after losing Ellie with panicked behavior that confuses Dug. Peterson was quick to talk about how seriously they took the storyline trying to create something that honors both the memory of Ellie and Asner. He said, “It was a hard one to decide to do because you don’t want to ever take away from Ellie. No one will ever replace Ellie and this relationship. But her last thing was, ‘Go have a new adventure’. And does Carl do that or not? Can he go forward?”
Don’t miss out on Elemental when it arrives in theaters on June 16, 2023. We expect more details to be released regarding Elemental and the Dug Days shorts “Carl’s Date” in the days and weeks ahead!
