Brightline Gets Federal Government Grant For Studies Needed For Disney World Rail Service
If you’ve been following along with the news regarding Brightline’s plans for a high-speed rail from the South of Florida to Orlando International Airport, then you’ll be pleased to know that a minor milestone has been reached!
According to a piece in the Orlando Sentinel, Sunrail, Brightline and Central Florida received an important federal grant allowing for environmental, construction and cost studies of installing a service that would run from Orlando International Airport to International Drive There would also be a proposed service to Tampa.
The nearly $16,000,000 grant will be matched by Brightline for the Orlando-to-Tampa rail route. As the Sentinel tells us, this plan will be the basis for seeking grants for hundreds of millions of dollars in additional federal money to help fun the ambitious high-speed rail route.
The focal point of the study will be the Sunshine Corridor which is a span of tracks from east of Orlando International Airport to the south of International Drive and Walt Disney World. It is hoped that the Sunshine Corridor tracks would be owned and operated by the government and that Brightline would lease usage of the tracks as part of their Orlando to Tampa route.
Brightline has already invested billions of dollars on a route between Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach and is in the final stages of construction from South Florida to Orlando International Airport.
Part of the project (the route from South to Central Florida) is expected to be completed this year with services starting in 2023.
