Based On Shang-Chi’s Success It Looks Like Eternals Will Have Cinema Only Release
If you’ve been following along with us over the past few weeks, no doubt you would’ve heard about the runaway success of Disney/Marvel’s latest film Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
It is this success, that ScreenRant speculates, will ensure that the upcoming Marvel film Eternals is strictly a theatrical release and will NOT go to Disney+.
It was originally thought that Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings was put in a difficult position when Disney made the decision NOT to release it simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+ as Disney had originally done with film Black Widow.
As we previously mentioned here at MickeyBlog, Disney CEO Bob Chapek referred to the Shang-Chi decision as an “interesting experiment “which received backlash given that this was Marvel’s first film to center on an Asian superhero. But, it provided Disney with an opportunity (though it was a bit of a gamble) to see if audiences loved their Marvel movies enough to head back to the theaters.
What industry insiders have reported is that behind the scenes Disney was weighing the decision to postpone the cinematic release of Eternals if Shang-Chi had done poorly in cinemas. The Eternals will be the latest MCU film and has a lot of buzz for its all-star cast and the fact that it is directed by Oscar Winner Chloe Zhao (Nomadland.) The film is slated to be released on November 5, 2021
According to ScreenRant, Disney has decided that Eternals will stick to it’s current date WITH “theatrical exclusivity.”
The fact that Shang-Chi pulled in $94 million domestically during a weekend that is usually shied away from in the movie biz (Labor Day) all but cemented the Eternals release strategy.
However, whether Eternals has the ability to match Shang-Chi’s record-setting box office figures remains to be seen on November 5th. You can check out the final trailer for Eternals below:
