‘Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.’Debuts on Disney+ on September 8
We are inching ever closer to the official premiere of ‘Doogie Kamealoha M.D’ a reimagining of Doogie Howser MD that will begin streaming on September 8th.
Similar to the original, “Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.” is a coming-of-age dramedy. But in this instance it follows Lahela “Doogie” Kamealoha, a 16-year-old prodigy juggling a budding medical career in Hawaii and life as a teenager.
Joining Lahela is a a comical ‘Ohana (family) and a group of friends helping her add a sense of normalcy to a rather extraordinary life. Lahela’s mother is also a career driven doctor who along with her doting father Benny help keep her grounded. You’ll also meet her older brother Kai, young brother Brian Patrick, her best friend Steph and the surfer boy she has a crush on named Walter. And let’s not forger her hospital colleagues Dr. Lee, Charles and Noelani.
Disney took to YouTube this week to share the theme song for the series and it may surprise you.
If you thought that jingle sounded familiar its because it is actually the iconic song from the original “Doogie Howser” reimagined and performed by Wendy Wang featuring world renowned Uekele player Jake Shimabukuro.
As you may have figured out, the series is set in modern day Hawai’i and is shot on location in O’ahu. Creator and executive producer Kourtney Kang (who was also born in Hawaii) infuse her own life stories into the experiences the series.
Peyton Elizabeth Lee (“Andi Mack”) stars as the title lead and is joined by “Kathleen Rose Perkins (“Big Shot”) as Dr. Clara Hannon, Jason Scott Lee (“Mulan”) as Benny Kamealoha, Matthew Sato (“Hawaii Five-O”) as Kai Kamealoha, Wes Tian as Brian Patrick Kamealoha, Emma Meisel (“American Horror Story”) as Steph, Mapuana Makia (“Finding ‘Ohana”) as Noelani and Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman (“UnREAL”) as Charles.
