Traffic At Orlando International Airport Picking Up This Spring Break
As we enter what has traditionally been the busy Spring Break period, Orlando International Airport is sharing its optimism for a busier travel year this March 2021. Last year MCO experienced what Positively Osceola calls a “dramatic drop in traffic” during the Spring of 2020 which was right at the start of the pandemic.
According to reports, Spring Break traffic to and from the airport was off 1.8 million passengers from previous years. Though Orlando International airport isn’t expected to return to pre-Covid levels just yet, the airport is experiencing a rebound. Officials at MCO told WESH that they are predicting a 45% increase in spring break travelers this year compared to 2020.
“The combination of additional flights in our market, the expanded distribution of COVID-19 vaccines and the undeniable lure of Central Florida as a getaway destination portends for robust air travel as we approach this year’s Spring Break,” says Phil Brown, Chief Executive Officer of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority. “It is a much-welcomed improvement over this time last year when we were at the depths of the pandemic.”
As Positively Osceola points out there are a couple of factors contributing to the optimism being felt by the travel industry. With COVID cases on the decline and vaccinations on the rise, airlines are now starting to look at add for seats to the market.
In addition and in what is pretty exciting news, Hawaiian Airlines is actually planning the first-of-its-kind service that will take guests from Orlando to Honolulu starting on March 13th.
So for those travelling to and from Orlando this Spring Break period here are some helpful stats:
- 55,435 departures are expected from MCO on April 4th (Easter Sunday) making it the busiest travel date of Spring 2021.
- Orlando International Airport is expecting 1.9 million departing passengers this Spring Break Period.
However, despite a pick-up in travel it should be noted that the Centers for disease control is still recommending that guests exercise an abundance of caution and that travel does increase the chances of getting or spreading COVID-19. Those heading to Disney World should also expect mandatory health and safety protocols including mask-wearing, temperature checks, attendance caps, social distancing requirements and more!
