‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ Will Not Be an Origin Story
After a slower 2024 that saw Marvel Studios release only one film (Deadpool & Wolverine), Marvel is set to kick things into gear next year with the release of Captain America: New World Order, Thunderbolts* and The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
The latter film will see Marvel’s First Family finally arrive in the MCU. As opposed to other recent introductions such as Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Eternals, however, according to director Matt Shakman, The Fantastic Four: First Steps will not be an origin story.
“One of the things we decided early on was not to do an origin story. One of the ways we’re making it our own thing is we’re not telling the story of them going up and being changed, and starting our story [there],” Shakman revealed in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly.

“There’s a lot of well-known narrative that leads into that moment, right? And then you’re making up your new story starting basically at the end of the first act, and we thought, ‘Well, let’s just start this thing off on a completely new foot. So we are beginning after that.”
Differentiating Itself From the Pack
As both the 2005 and 2015 versions of The Fantastic Four focused on the characters’ origin stories, it sounds like Marvel Studios wants to differentiate their version of the team from previous adaptations.
The MCU Fantastic Four will be comprised of Pedro Pascal (Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby (Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman), Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm/Human Torch), and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Ben Grimm/the Thing).

In the same interview with EW, Moss-Bachrach said that he has intentionally avoided watching previous Fantastic Four films.
“I haven’t seen those movies. When I got hired to do this, it didn’t feel like that would be productive to watch those movies. People ask me about ‘How is this different from those other ones?’ and I don’t think it’s helpful to make something in opposition to something else,” the actor said.

“We’re really just making our own specific thing. This is no discredit to those movies. But we’re telling our own very specific story. Like any great play, you can cast a play with four people and then recast it with four different people, and it’s the same play, but it’s a completely different experience.”
The Character’s Relationships Will Ground ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’
According to Pascal, it will be the relationship between the team’s members and not previous adaptations that will guide The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
“The authorship that we have as a family is what’s anchoring us to this experience. And the rest of it is all valuable information and inspiration,” he added.
