Giancarlo Esposito Discusses His Last-Minute Addition to ‘Captain America: Brave New World’
At San Diego Comic-Con last weekend, Giancarlo Esposito finally revealed what character he will be portraying in Captain America: Brave New World.
After playing coy for weeks, the veteran actor announced that he will portray Sidewinder, the king of the Serpent Society, in the upcoming Captain America film.

Interestingly, Sidewinder was not included in the original plan for Brave New World. Instead, Esposito’s villain was added when the film underwent 22 days of reshoots.
Esposito Discusses His Late Addition
After taking the stage with his Captain America: Brave New World castmates, Esposito told The Wrap that joining the film so late was a unique experience for him.

“It’s normal for me to see the whole script and to know all of what’s going on. And because I wasn’t privy to that, I had to go backwards and create a backstory for myself, whether it was going to be used or not,” he explained.

“So that when I came on screen, I was full, and I was proficient and knowing who the guy was.”
Developing Sidewinder
Because of his late entry into the MCU, Esposito needed to quickly make decisions about who his character was. It was that process that helped him bring Sidewinder to life.
“The challenges were to commit to exactly what I thought about, and what was on the page, and have him have the ability to be absolutely fierce, no matter which way it was going to go,” Esposito said. “And to complicate him enough so that you could look at him and go, ‘There’s more. There’s more. I know there is, I can see it.’”

Still, the actor is aware that his late addition was not ideal.
“And that’s the disadvantage of not coming in the beginning and knowing what the whole story is.”

Captain America: Brave New World will hit theaters on February 14, 2025.
