Shawn Levy Gives an Update on His ‘Star Wars’ Film
While Shawn Levy is currently busy promoting Deadpool & Wolverine, which looks like it’s on track for a record-setting opening weekend, his schedule after the film debuts is just as busy.
In addition to the final series of Stranger Things, in which he will serve as both executive producer and director, Marvel has also been eyeing Levy as the potential director of Avengers 5.
With everything going on in Levy’s career, it is easy to forget that the director has also been attached to a potential Star Wars feature film. When the reports first surfaced, it was suggested that Levy would begin work on his Star Wars project after he completed his work on Stranger Things and Deadpool.
Levy Started Working on the Project Last Spring
Last September, Levy revealed that he had just started working on the Star Wars film when the WGA strikes began last spring.
“We were just starting the process of developing my movie, and the writer strike happened. So we are in that holding pattern that so much of our industry is in,” Levy told Collider.
The Latest Update
Now that Levy has almost reached the finish line on Deadpool & Wolverine, the director is once again being asked about his Star Wars endeavor.
“Development is slow-going and developing something with that amount of mythology and scaffolding, it takes time,” he said.
Lucasfilm Can Afford to Wait
Luckily for Levy, Lucasfilm should be able to give him time. Currently, there are at least four Star Wars feature films in development, with The Mandalorian & Grogu set to lead the way in 2016.
Also on the horizon are a stand-alone Rey Skywalker film, James Mangold’s Dawn of the Jedi, and Dave Filoni’s New Republic movie.
Thor: Ragnarok director Taiki Waititi is also attached to a Star Wars feature film, though updates on that project have been few and far between.
Should Levy manage to helm entries in both the Star Wars galaxy and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it will be quite the accomplishment.
