‘Inside Out 2’ Has Best Thursday of 2024, Could Be Heading For a $100 Million Opening Weekend
While Inside Out 2 was already tracking towards the biggest domestic opening weekend of 2024, the film’s hot start is setting it up for a potential $100 million opening weekend.
The highly anticipated sequel to 2015’s Inside Out managed to bring in $13 million in previews on Thursday, topping Dune: Part 2 for the year’s high water mark.
The film was initially expected to gross $85 million at the domestic box office this weekend and perhaps another $50 million abroad. Now, however, Pixar should be setting its sights even higher.
The Film Dominates Internationally
In addition to its strong preview numbers, Inside Out 2 managed to shatter multiple box office records in foreign markets yesterday. The film led the way in the eight international markets where it debuted, including in the Philippines, where it had the third-highest opening ever, and Israel, where it gave Pixar its strongest opening of all time.
In addition to delivering strong box office results, Inside Out 2 has earned rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. Currently, the film holds a 93% Rotten Tomatoes “fresh” rating from critics and a 95% approval rating from audiences. You can read our full review of the film here.
A Triumphant Return for Pixar
Inside Out 2 will take the audience back to Headquarters, where Joy, Sadness, and the rest of Riley’s Emotions are still at the helm of her brain.
When Riley begins to go through puberty, however, new Emotions, including Anxiety, embarrassment, and Ennui, move in.
While Pixar had a sleeper hit last year with Elemental, Inside Out 2 debuting to a $100 million opening weekend would be a true return to form the studio.
