A Winnie the ‘Poohniverse’ of Horror Movies is Apparently on the Horizon
With more Disney characters set to land in the public domain in the next couple of years, independent filmmakers are already planning on how to capitalize.
Following the success of last year’s Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, Jagged Edge Productions and independent film distributor ITN Studios are already planning their next act.
With even more iconic characters, including Bambi, Pinocchio, Peter Pan, and Sleeping Beauty, now in the public domain, the London-based horror collaborators are set to release Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble.
The Twisted Childhood Universe
The upcoming movie came out of Jagged Edge chief Scott Chambers’ desire to see “an Avengers that is all villains.”
“It’d have Freddy Krueger, Jason, ‘Halloween,’ ‘Scream,’ all of those. Obviously, that will never happen, but we can make it happen in our own little way, and that’s where this film has been born,” Chambers told Variety.
In an attempt to recreate the magic of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the characters set to appear in Poohniverse will star in standalone films released throughout 2024. Jagged Edge calls the universe the Twisted Childhood Universe.
Among the upcoming movies are Bambi: The Reckoning, Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare, and Pinocchio Unstrung. All three of the film’s main characters entered the public domain in the last two years.
Independent Filmmakers Continue to Capitalize
After years of delaying the inevitable, more and more of Disney’s iconic characters are entering the public domain (although not necessarily the Disney version of those characters). With iconic characters now free to use, it sounds like more and more cheap horror films are on the horizon.
