Anthony Mackie Says That the MCU Lacks Creative Freedom
How faithfully the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) follows the lore laid down in the Marvel comics has long been debated by fans.
Ever since the arrival of 2008’s Iron Man, die-hard Marvel comic fans have pointed out and bemoaned the many differences between the comic book stories and their film adaptations.
While the MCU has largely stayed true to its comic origins, Kevin Feige and his team have taken some creative freedom when making their films. This has manifested in the composition of the original Avengers (no Wasp) and Guardians of the Galaxy (no Adam Warlock), the backstory to some of its most iconic heroes (Ms. Marvel is not an Inhuman), or even the gender of some of its characters (Ghost, Taskmaster, the Ancient One).
Still, by and large, the MCU has followed a blueprint that was created in the comics.
Anthony Mackie Says “There’s Only So Much You Can Do” in the MCU
According to Captain America himself, Anthony Mackie, the MCU’s dedication to its comic book origins means that creators have less creative freedom.
Mackie’s newest project is Twisted Metal, an action comedy based on the Sony PlayStation game. According to the actor, the difference is stark.
“I would say the Marvel thing is completely different, just because it’s such a space of controlled entertainment. Like, there’s only so much you can do. There’s only so much creativity you can bring to the table, because Stan Lee gave us so much content,” he said.
After expanding on the freedom that he had while making Twisted Metal, Mackie returned to his thoughts on Marvel.
“And that’s the hard thing about the Marvel universe. It’s like, you can’t really go outside of the lines of those comic books,” he continued.
“You know, when we introduced the Falcon, and the growth of the Falcon to Captain America, all of that had to coincide with what Stan had already gave us. So it’s an interesting juggle to be a part of that world. And this was more like, ‘Let’s just have fun and figure it out as we go.”
Mackie’s story in the MCU will continue when Captain America: Brave New World hits theaters on February 14, 2025.
