Michael Culver, Whose Iconic Death in ‘Empire Strikes Back’ Made Him a Star Wars Legend, Has Passed Away at 85
Michael Culver, the British actor whose prolific 68-year career spanned radio, theater, television, and movies, has passed away at the age of 85.
Culver originally came up in the British theater scene, where he performed at the Old Vic, Dundee Rep, and London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.
In the 1970s, Culver had a series of reoccurring roles on television, appearing in The Adventures of Black Beauty and the BBC drama Secret Army.
Then, in 1980, Culver was cast in his most iconic role — Captain Needa in The Empire Strikes Back.
Joining Star Wars
While a relatively minor character in the Star Wars universe, Culver’s Captain Needa had one of the most iconic death scenes in cinematic history.
After losing track of the rebels, Culver’s Imperial officer heads towards Darth Vader, ready to apologize and take responsibility. After the scene cuts, the audience sees Culver doubled over and gasping for breath before collapsing. The reason for his agony? Darth Vader’s Force choke.
“Apology accepted, Captain Needa,” the Sith Lord quips.
Later Career
Outside of his Star Wars work, Culver had major appearances in Passage to India, Squadron, and The House of Eliott. Still, it was his appearance in Star Wars that he would be best remembered for.
In remembering the late actor, his agency, Alliance Agents, called it an “honor” to connect him with Star Wars fans around the world.
“A real highlight was taking Michael to Celebration in Chicago in 2019. He was lost for words when he saw his queue line with nearly 200 people waiting to see him,” the agency said.
Culver is survived by his second wife Amanda, children Roderic, Justin, and Susan’ and four grandchildren.
