‘X-Men ’97’ Creator Beau DeMayo Has Been Fired Just Weeks Before the Series Premiere
In a shocking turn of events, Beau DeMayo has been fired from Marvel Studios.
The Moon Knight scribe was in the midst of preparing for the launch of X-Men ’97, the animated series that he wrote and produced.
The highly anticipated continuation of the classic 90’s cartoon X-Men: The Animated Series is set to land on Disney+ in just eight days.
A Marvel Veteran
Prior to his work on X-Men ’97, DeMayo not only wrote Moon Knight but also worked on an early draft of the still unreleased Blade. He had recently completed writing duties on season two of the X-Men series, was lining up press, and planning to attend the Hollywood premiere of X-Men ’97.
According to reports, he was even tossing around ideas for a third season of the series with his team recently.
The parting of ways between Marvel and DeMayo happened early last week. His company email was subsequently deactivated, and the cast and crew were informed that he was no longer a part of the project. While no reason for the firing was given, DeMayo’s Instagram account has also been deleted.
DeMayo’s Addition To X-Men ’97 Had Been Lauded
While not a part of the original X-Men: The Animated Series, DeMayo had been open about how the show inspired him as a child. DeMayo’s hiring in November 2021 grabbed headlines as his addition brought a gay Black man’s perspective to the project.
In the press, the showrunner discussed how growing up as the adopted son of white parents with a Korean sister in the South made him relate to the X-Men characters and their struggles to be accepted by society.
Formerly a frequent poster on social media, DeMayo had gone silent in recent days.
At this time, it is unclear if DeMayo’s departure from Marvel will affect the production of X-Men ’97. The show has been picked up for at least two seasons.
The series is set to premiere on Disney+ on March 20.
