Sam Rockwell Discuss a Possible Return as Justin Hammer For ‘Armor Wars’
The last time we saw Sam Rockwell’s Justin Hammer in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), he was making a cameo in the 2014 short film All Hail the King.
Rockwell originated the role of Iron Man’s cocky foil in 2010’s Iron Man 2. After Tony Stark publicly humiliated Hammer and his technology, the businessman recruited Ivan Vanko to replicate Stark’s Iron Man armor.
Vanko eventually turned on Hammer and took control of the fleet of armor himself. Hammer was eventually arrested at the Stark Expo and sent to Seagate Penitentiary.
Will Hammer Return For ‘Armor Wars’?
Outside of his brief appearance in All Hail the King, where he is interviewed about Trevor Slattery, Hammer has been notably absent.
While his longtime foil, Tony Stark, is now dead, an opportunity to revisit Justin Hammer could arise in the upcoming Armor Wars film.
During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Rockwell was asked if there was any truth to the rumors that his character could return for the feature film.
“I’m waiting for the phone call,” Rockwell said. “I haven’t gotten the phone call.”
If asked, however, Rockwell was adamant that he would be interested.
“Listen, I’m in, dude. Let’s go.”
What We Know About ‘Armor Wars’
Outside of Armor Wars being transformed from a streaming series to a feature film, we do not know much about the upcoming Marvel Studios project.
In November 2022, producer Nate More gave a small preview of the story while explaining why it was being turned into a feature film.
“I mean in that case, there were some great ideas that were coming out for that show, but that, to be quite honest, felt too big for that show. You know, our Disney+ shows are awesome, and we love them. But the budgets are not the same as the features, that’s no secret. And when you’re talking about a show that wants to be about seeing all the cool armors and, you know, Don Cheadle interacting with all these armors and sort of the legacy of Tony Stark, that became kind of cost prohibitive to do as a show.
“And we realized as a feature, not only can we get into some of the beautiful imagery that is from publishing, and there’s certainly an Armor Wars run. But also there are ways then to leverage the ideas of that movie and affect other movies down the line.”
Since 2022, Marvel has been silent about the film’s production. Hopefully, however, Rockwell will get his wish, and we will see Justin Hammer again.
