Disney+ Removes a Ton of Movies, Series, and Documentaries in EMEA
As part of the Walt Disney Company’s overall shift in steaming strategy, another round of programs has been removed from Disney+; this time, however, it is in the EMEA region (Europe, the Middle East, and Africa).
Unlike last May’s Disney+ in the United States, which primarily saw the removal of Disney+ original series and movies, the EMEA removals targeted Disney Channel Original Movies and vintage Disney live-action films.

There were also some series removals, including Zeke and Luther, So Random, and Pepper Ann (not Pepper Ann!). Additionally, the first three seasons of National Geographic’s Genius and several ESPN and Nat Geo documentaries were removed.

According to sources, the Disney+ EMEA removals were the result of a “library title review”.
A Change In Disney’s Streaming Strategy
Disney+ originally launched in 2019. At the time, Bob Iger and Disney executives were determined to flood the streamer with as much content as possible.

With Wall Street solely focused on subscriber count, Disney was willing to spare no expense to drive traffic to the new streaming service.
Since that time, we have entered a new era of streaming. After seeing content companies losing billions on streaming services, Wall Street began to turn away from subscriber count and instead demand profitability.

It is with these parameters in mind that Disney has changed course and begun cutting content from Disney+.
During last year’s May 10th earnings call, former Disney CFO Christine McCarthy publicly announced that as part of the company’s new streaming strategy, Disney was “in the process of reviewing the content on our DTC services to align with the strategic changes in our approach to content curation” and “will be removing certain content from our streaming platforms.”
