Daisy Ridley’s ‘Young Woman and the Sea’ May Get a Theatrical Release Instead of Premiering on Disney+
In what may be a first for Disney+, The Walt Disney Company is reportedly contemplating giving the upcoming Daisy Ridley vehicle Young Woman and the Sea a theatrical release.
The film, directed by Joachim Ronning, is based on the Glenn Stout novel of the same name. The drama tells the story of Gertrude “Trudy” Ederle, the first woman to ever swim across the English Channel.
Ederle, who won gold at the 1924 Olympics, financed her quest by contracting with two newspapers and selling her story. By the time she achieved the historic feat, only five men had ever crossed the channel.
The Film Had Been Set For a Streaming Release
Young Woman and the Sea was originally slated for a streaming release. After the picture received positive scores from test audiences, however, Diseny’s plans may change.
According to Deadline, Disney is now considering a May 31 theatrical release for the film. Additionally, the 2024 Summer Olympics would then provide the backdrop for the film’s eventual Disney+ release over the summer.

The George Clooney sports drama The Boys in the Boat was recently released to theaters and proved to be a hit for Amazon MGM Studios. With the 2024 box office facing a dearth of releases in the early half of the year, Disney may be unable to pass up the opportunity.
More Hurdles to Clear
However, Disney would likely have to iron out a deal with the film’s talent should the film be moved to theaters.

With Ronning in the midst of directing Tron: Ares and Ridley signed on to reprise her role as Rey Skywalker in a future Star Wars film, Disney is seemingly on good terms with both parties. Perhaps then, we will see Young Woman and the Sea debut in theaters.
