Lake Buena Vista and Bay Lake Prepare To Move Away From the CFTOD
The small cities located inside of Disney World are moving closer to independence after the Ron DeSantis-appointed Central Florida Tourism Oversight District (CFTOD) cut them off from most government services.
The city councils for Lake Buena Vista and Bay Lake met Wednesday to work on their transition away from the CFTOD.
Disney’s Tiny Cities
While only a few dozen people live in the two cities, residents are usually Disney loyalists who have homes on Disney property.
Such a setup worked well under the former Disney-controlled Reedy Creek Improvement District. For years, the city’s services were intertwined with Reedy Creek.
However, following the creation of the new CFTOD, late last year, the district canceled its long-standing agreement with the cities to provide services, including fire protection, accounting, and information technology.
Moving Away From the CFTOD
With the agreement set to officially end on January 16, city manager Randy Singh is working to replace most of the services that Reedy Creek provided and finalize a new deal with the CFTOD for fire protection.
One service that will not be changing for Lake Buena Vista and Bay Lake is law enforcement. The two cities receive those services through a contract with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.
While things are changing in Bay Lake and Lake Buena Vista, Singh says that visitors to Walt Disney World will not notice.
“No difference in terms of services, in terms of security, level of services will remain the same,” Singh said.
