Following the 737 Max 9 Grounding, United and Alaska Airlines Cancel Over 300 Flights on Monday
In the aftermath of the Alaska Airlines flight incident that saw a panel and a window blow out of the plane, Alaska and United Airlines have both grounded all Boeing 737 Max 9 planes.
In total, the two airlines canceled a combined 342 flights on Monday, with 138 of those flights coming from Alaska. That number comprised 20% of the scheduled Alaska Airlines flights.
On Sunday, the cancellation weighed heavier, with 170 Alsaka Air flights canceled.
More Cancellations Are on the Horizon
In total, Alaska Airlines has 65 737 Max 9 aircraft in its fleet. The airline says the planes will remain grounded until the US Federal Aviation Administration determines how to inspect planes.
“While we await the airworthiness directive inspection criteria from the FAA and Boeing, our maintenance teams are prepared and ready to perform the required inspections,” the airline said.
Alaska also warned customers that the cancellations will likely continue through the first half of the week.
“Cancellations will continue through the first half of the week, and we encourage guests with travel plans to continue to check their email and alaskaair.com for updates,” they said.
United Also Cancelled Flights
United Airlines, which also operates 737 Max 9 aircraft, canceled 204 flights on Monday, or 7% of its schedule.
The airline has 70 737 Max 9 aircraft in its fleet, with the grounding causing 60 cancellations on Sunday. In addition to the groundings, travelers also had to deal with the winter weather that blasted much of the country.
In total, the FFA said its grounding directive will impact 171 planes around the world. Following the scary scene aboard Alaska Flight 1282, however, the FAA will take its time to ensure the safety of its planes.
