Rick Riordan Has Begun Work on ‘Percy Jackson’ Season 2
Percy Jackson and the Olympians is a bonafide hit for Disney+.
The new live-action series based on the popular Rick Riordan books had one of the biggest debuts in the streamer’s history and has finally given Disney+ a non-Star Wars or Marvel success.

The series follows the adventures of Percy Jackson, a 12-year-old demigod who is coming to terms with his newfound divine powers when Zeus accuses him of stealing his master lightning bolt.

With the help of his friends, Percy must find the stolen lightning bolt and restore order to Olympus.
Rick Riordan Found the Right Partner in Disney
While Percy Jackson and the Olympians is the first time that Riordan’s Percy Jackson series has been adapted for television, 20th Century Fox previously made two films based on the series, 2010’s Percy Jackson & the Lightning Thief and 2013’s Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters.
While Riordan was tangentially involved in the creation of those films, he grew frustrated with the final result.
This time around, the Percy Jackson creator says he has found the perfect partner at Disney.

“And Disney was just from day one, just like as each step happened, [they were] always having a conversation. So as we were building this, from how we were shooting it, where we were shooting it, who we were casting, where we were going, what it needed. It was always a really good conversation to make sure that the show needed what it needed. I’m really grateful to them for that because that doesn’t happen very often. And everybody knew that this was such a special property that we needed to do it right,” he explains.
Will There Be a Second Season?
While there has been no confirmation that Percy Jackson will continue for a second season, during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Riordan revealed that preliminary work has begun on a potential second season.

“We are doing what we can to prepare, on the eventuality that we get the green light. We don’t know, it is not official. You know, we’re getting reactions like we’ve had tonight, amazing reactions, from everywhere,” Riordan explained.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians covers the events of the first Percy Jackson novel, The Lightning Thief. Going forward, the expectation is that the series will continue to follow the plot of the Percy Jackson books, with season 2 covering Sea of Monsters.

For now, any potential second season remains speculative. Based on the strong reception that Percy Jackson has received and the fact that there is a well of source material for Disney to pull from, I believe that Percy’s story will continue on Disney+.
