‘Poor Things’ and ‘Indiana Jones’ Earn Oscar Shortlist Nominations
2023 was a disappointing year at the box office by Disney standards. While films such as Haunted Mansion, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and The Marvels failed to meet expectations, Disney also managed to have bright spots, including Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Elemental, and the recently released Poor Things.
Even in a down year for Disney, the studio is still set to have a big night at the Oscars.
Ahead of the March 10 ceremony, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has released its annual shortlist and Disney was represented.
‘Poor Things’ Earns Three Nominations
While Barbie led the way with five early nominations, Poor Things managed to scrounge up three nominations of its own.
The film was nominated for Best Original Score alongside Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and Elemental.
The trio of Disney films also picked up nominations for Best Visual Effects.
Poor Things was also nominated for Best Makeup.
Interstingly, Disney was shut out of the Best Original Song category. The studio was surely hoping that Wish would pick up a nomination here in spite of its disappointing box office results.
Other Nomination Leaders
Outside of Disney, the big winner once again was Barbie, which led with five shortlist nominations.
Killers of the Flower Moon meanwhile creaked up three nominations, while The Color Purple and Oppenheimer tied Poor Things with three.
The Academy Award nomination voting runs from January 11 through the 16th. The official nominations will be announced on January 23.
Then, final voting will take place from February 22 through the 27, and the awards will be handed out on March 10.
