An Iconic Piece of Disney History Is Now on Display at the Walt Disney Family Museum
The Walt Disney Family Museum is celebrating the 100th anniversary of The Walt Disney Company in a way that only they can — by bringing Disney history to life.
This December, the museum is shining the spotlight on a pair of unassuming ballet slippers.
A True Piece of Disney History
This pair of shoes was worn by Margaret Kerry, the live-action model for Tinker Bell in Walt Disney’s animated classic Peter Pan.
In 1951, Kerry, who was a dancer and an actress, became an animator’s muse for Tinker Bell as they worked on Peter Pan.
The team, which was led by Disney Legend Marc Davis, embraced Kerry’s playful spirit and gave her the creative freedom to create the fairy’s personality.
He said, ‘Margaret, we want her to be you,'” Kerry recalled.
Kerry Played the Role
To capture Tinker Bell’s ethereal movements, artists filmed Kerry dancing with whimsical props and giant set pieces.
The actress even pirouetted with twelve-foot-tall scissors to mimic Tinker Bell’s search for Peter’s lost shadow.
Those live-action recordings would become the blueprint that animators used to bring Tinker Bell to life in animation.
A Truly Magical Discovery
Seven decades after Peter Pan was completed, the Walt Disney Family Museum made a surprising discovery.
During the restoration process, historians found a “glimmering speck” in the fabric. Could this be a touch of pixie dust?
To find out for yourself, you are going to have to visit the Walt Disney Family Museum. With all the Disney magic in the air, I wouldn’t be surprised by anything.
