Hayden Christensen Talks Returning To ‘Star Wars’ Without George Lucas
One of the true joys of being a Star Wars fan in recent years has been to see the return of Hayden Christensen’s Anakin Skywalker.
As someone who grew up with the Star Wars prequel trilogy and continued to follow the story through the animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Anakin Skywalker has epitomized everything I love about the franchise for as long as I can remember.
Christensen made his triumphant return to the galaxy far, far away for 2022’s Obi-Wan Kenobi before reprising his role in Ahsoka.
Christensen Talks Returning Without Lucas
Interstingly, Christensen’s return for the two streaming series not only marked the first time he had appeared in Star Wars content since 2005, but also the first time he has ever portrayed the character without George Lucas’ involvement.
So, what did the actor think about returning to Star Wars without Lucas overseeing everything?
“At first, I felt like I was cheating on him a little bit. [Laughs] But it’s a different time for Star Wars now, and I think it’s really exciting that we now have this period where there are other storytellers coming in and giving their take on the universe,” Christensen explained.
George Lucas’ Presence Looms Large
Still, no matter how far Star Wars expands from the original stories, Christensen believes that Lucas’ presence looms large.
“But, of course, it all goes back to the maker, and George Lucas is very much in the front of everyone’s mind when we’re making a decision, and we want to make stuff that he would be happy with for sure.”
With George Lucas-acolyte Dave Filoni now the CCO of Lucasfilm, it doesn’t sound like the Star Wars creator’s influence will diminish anytime soon.
