Natasha Liu Bordizzo Explains Why Sabine Was so “Disrespectful” in ‘Ahsoka’
At the core of the Disney+ series Ahsoka was an exploration of the master-apprentice relationship in the Star Wars universe.
While Ahsoka Tano was still grappling with the fact that Anakin Skywalker had not died during Order 66, but instead fallen to the Dark side and transformed into Darth Vader, she also had her own broken relationship to mend with her apprentice Sabine Wren.
Sabine and Ahsoka’s Broken Relationship
When we first catch up with Sabine and Ahsoka, there is tension between them. While we don’t know exactly what went wrong in their past, something is clearly deeply broken.
Natasha Liu Bordizzo, who portrayed Sabine in the series, admits that it was often hard to be so “disrespectful.”
“Being disrespectful to her in the scenes is so hard. It was challenging to remember that they have come from a period of a lot of pain and heaviness that has to be worked out and that their Master-apprentice relationship is being tested,” she explained.
As the story of Ahsoka continued to progress, Sabine and Tano began to understand each other, and slowly, they started to heal.
“I just respect Rosario so much, and there’s times where Sabine can be a little disrespectful. But I think it’s all part of the journey. It’s beautiful to watch that arc happen over the show and where they end up.”
Preparing to Play Sabine
While other Star Wars actors tasked with bringing characters from animation to live-action chose not to watch the animated series their characters originated. Bordizzo did just the opposite.
“I prepared for the role by watching just about every Star Wars project ever made, chronologically, by story.”
While the actress wanted to ensure a clear connectivity between her portrayal and the animated version of Sabine, she also wanted to be true to the live-action project.
“But then, of course, time’s passed and she’s been through a lot. I wanted them to be streamlined, but still separate in a way, and I wanted to just bring the truth of whatever the live action project brought on the day, every day on set.”
Ahsoka is streaming now on Disney+.
