Mark Ruffalo Wanted to Challenge His Association With Hulk in ‘Poor Things’
Mark Ruffalo and the Incredible Hulk are inextricably linked in the minds of fans worldwide. Ruffalo has portrayed the “strongest Avenger” in five movies and a Disney+ series over the last decade plus.
It is no wonder, then, that fans associate the Hollywood veteran with the not-so-jolly green giant.
Challenging the Audience
For his new role in Poor Things, however, Ruffalo wanted to break the mold and surprise audiences with the kind of character he was portraying.
“It was really mostly in the writing to say the things that he says,” Ruffalo explained. “And then it was this kind of playfulness that we had and wanting to break up any perceptions of myself that people come to think about me, even myself, and just to really challenge those expectations that I had on myself or the audience has on me of being a nice guy or being The Hulk or being Banner.”
In Poor Things, Ruffalo plays Duncan Wedderburn, a philanderer who seduces Bela Baxter (Emma Stone) and takes her on a whirlwind European adventure.
“I really just felt the need to break all that up and try something new and different and daring,” Ruffalo says.
Expanding His Horizons
For a man who has been in Hollywood for over 30 years, it is not always easy to change. Still, Ruffalo seems to have succeded.
The actor’s performance in Poor Things has been lauded by critics and fans alike. Ruffalo even picked up a Golden Globe nomination for his performance.
While it is fun to see Ruffalo expand his horizons, hopefully, we have not seen the actor’s final portrayal of Hulk. Maybe, we finally get the Hulk solo movie that fans have been clamoring for for years.
