Disney Acquires ‘Nǎi Nai and Wài Pó’ For ‘People and Places’ Revival
Disney Branded Television has acquired the rights to Sean Wang’s award-winning documentary short Nǎi Nai and Wài Pó.
The first-generation Taiwanese American filmmaker’s documentary features dialogue in both Mandarin and English. The film tells a “multigenerational story” that celebrates Sean Wang’s two grandmothers, one from each side of his family.

The film premiered at the SXSSW film festival, where it brought home the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award. Since that time, it has gone on to receive Grand Jury Awards at AFI Fest and SIFF 2023.
Additionally, it received a slot on the IDA Shortlist and Special Jury Recognition at LAAPFF 2023.
A Part of Disney’s ‘People and Places’ Revival
Nǎi Nai and Wài Pó will be in the first installment of Disney’s People and Place reboot. The documentary film series was originally produced in the 1950s and 1960s. The revival was announced in 2019, however, since that time updates have been scarce.

“The collection of short documentary films will feature a mix of up-and-coming and established filmmakers telling the real-life stories of extraordinary people and places from around the globe that embody the Disney ethos,” the series description reads.
In addition to directing, Wang also serves as the film’s producer alongside Sam Davis and Malcolm Pullinger. The documentary will be available to stream on Disney+ in 2024.
