Orlando International Airport Announces Major Expansion and Renovations
With Orlando International Airport expected to exceed 58 million passengers by the end of the year, the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority Board has unveiled a series of new improvements coming to the airport in order to maintain an optimal customer experience.
The biggest part of the upcoming renovations will be an expansion of Terminal C. The Board has approved a contract with Ricondo & Associates that will see Terminal C expanded to accommodate an additional 16 to 24 aircraft gates.
The Automated People Movers Will Be Refreshed
Additionally, the Board approved funding to replace the Automated People Mover (APM) systems to Airsides 2 & 4.
Under a new contract with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries America, all vehicles, running surfaces, central control equipment, and all other required subsystems will be replaced.
Mitsubishi will also maintain passenger service to Airsides 2 and 4 during the work to minimize the time that any of the two APM lanes to each Airside is down.
The Airside 4 APM System was initially installed in 1990 and the cars were replaced in 2008. The Airside 2 APM, on the other hand, was placed into service in 2000.
The APM renovations are expected to be concluded by 2027.
Airfield Improvements
Last but not least, the Aviation Authority also awarded a pair of contracts to “improve airfield surfaces and refresh signage and pavement markings.”
As part of the improvements, the Hubbard Construction Company will rehabilitate a portion of Taxiways G and H, as well as the connectors north of Taxiway E.
The construction is scheduled to start in November 2023 and conclude in August 2024.
