Emmy-Nominated Star Wars Costume Designer Shawna Trpcic Has Passed Away at 56
Emmy-nominated costume designer Shawna Trpcic, who influenced the look of numerous Star Wars projects including The Mandalorian and Ahsoka, has died. She was 56.
Trpcic, who described herself as a die-hard Star Wars fan, was born on October 18, 1966, in Artesia, California. After getting her start as a costume designer on the 1990 film Mom, Trpcic amassed more than 47 TV and film credits to her name including the sci-fi series Firefly.
Trpcic’s death was confirmed via the Costume Designer’s Guild on Instagram.
“With great sadness, we inform you that multiple Emmy-nominated and CDG Award-winning costume designer Shawna Trpcic has passed away unexpectedly,” the guild wrote.

“Shawna was one of Hollywood’s pre-eminent science fiction costume designers. A creative force, a trusted collaborator, and all-around delightful person for her friends and colleagues. She was a beloved member of the Star Wars/Lucasfilm family, as well as the community of costume designers and the Costume Designers Guild.”
Joining the Star Wars Universe
Trpcic eventually joined the galaxy far, far away for season 2 of The Mandalorian, before going to work on The Book of Boba Fett and Ahsoka.
According to StarWars.com, Trpcic was regarded as “something of a Star Wars historian” by her peers. The costume designer would read every making-of-book to better understand how the various Star Wars films were made.
In her studies, she also sought out material that “included discussions between George Lucas and his designers and concept artists, which became the foundational ideas of her never-ending research into Star Wars costume design.”
Favreau and Filoni Pay Tribute To Trpic
Following the news of Trpic’s passing, Star Wars showrunners/producers Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau paid tribute to the late costume designer.
“Shawna had a deep love and appreciation for Star Wars,” says Filoni. “You can see that in every piece of work she did with us. She loved everything about being a part of these stories, including connecting with fans and being a part of that community. I feel like she has always been a part of Star Wars. Her costumes tell a story, providing the suggestion of a life experience that happened before the cameras rolled. I loved collaborating with Shawna, and I will miss her presence.”
“Her creativity brought this world to life,” adds Favreau. “She will be deeply missed both as a friend and as a colleague.”
Trpcic was nominated for an Emmy for her work on both The Mandalorian Season 2 and The Book of Boba Fett. Just earlier this year, she was once again nominated for an Emmy, this time for her work on The Mandalorian Season 3.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Shawna’s family and friends.
