Welcome back to our continuing trip through The Walt Disney Company’s past. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- October 8.
October 8th was a slower day in Disney history, but it still featured the opening of a Magic Kingdom attraction, the release of a live-action movie, and the closure of a Disneyland staple. So, let’s get started!
Maxwell House Coffee House Closes (1957)
On this day in 1957, the Maxwell House Coffee House closed in Disneyland.
The coffee shop would be replaced by the HIls Brothers Coffee House in June 1958.
The Best of Walt Disney’s True-Life Adventures Released (1975)
On this day in 1975, The Best of Walt Disney’s Ture-Life Adventures was released.
The film featured segments of Disney’s Oscar-winning True-Life Adventures including Seal Island, Beaver Valley, and Water Birds.
Walt Disney’s Plane Makes Final Flight
On this day in 1992, Walt Disney’s Grumman Gulfstream 1 made its final flight.
The plane touched down on World Drive and would be added to The Backlot Tour at the Disney-MGM Studios.
Spa Opens in the Grand Floridian
On this day in 1997, a full-service spa opened at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort.
Appropriately, the resort was renamed Disney’s Gran Floridian Resort & Spa.
Mulan Premieres (1998)
On this day in 1998, Mulan premiered in London, England.
The animated feature film tells the story of a young girl who saves China after taking her father’s place in the Chinese army.
Journey Into Your Imagination Closes (2001)
On this day in 2001, Journey Into Your IMagination closed.
The ride closed in order to facilitate the addition of Figment.
Mickey’s Philharmagic Opens (2003)
On this day in 2003, Mickey’s PhilharMagic opened in the Magic Kingdom.
Directed by George Scribner, the 12-minute 3D attraction recreates some of Disney’s most iconic movie moments.
The Golden Horseshoe Variety Show Ends (2003)
Also on this day in 2003, The Golden Horseshoe Variety Show was performed for the final time at Disneyland.
On hand for the final performance was Wally Boag, who starred in the original Golden Horseshoe Revue for 27 years.
Halloweentown High Premieres (2004)
On this day in 2004, Halloweentown High premiered.
The third film in the Halloweentown series stars Debbie Reynolds, Kimberly J. Brown, and Joey Zimmerman.
Secretariat Released (2010)
On this day in 2010, Secretariat was released.
The film was based on the story of 1973 Triple Crown winning horse Secretariat.
Flynn’s Arcade Opens (2010)
On this day in 2010, Flynn’s Arcade opened at Disney California Adventure.
The arcade was part of the promotion for DIsney’s upcoming film Tron: Legacy.
Princess Fairytale Hall Opens in Disneyland (2011)
Finally, on this day in 2011, Princess Fairytale Hall opened in Disneyland.
The new meet-and-greet allows visitors to interact with their favorite Disney Princesses.
