‘Ahsoka’ Director Discusses Hayden Christensen’s Return
After starting off a bit slow, Ahsoka kicked it into full gear last week, culminating in the shocking ending that saw the titular former Jedi reunited with her master Anakin Skywalker in the World Between Worlds.
The episode’s ending scene was not only meaningful for the characters on screen, but also for a generation of fans who fell in love with Star Wars through the story of Anakin and his young apprentice Snips.
According to Ahsoka Episode 4 director Peter Ramsey, fans weren’t the only ones who got emotional, so did Hayden Christensen, who finally got to portray Anakin following his redemption by Luke Skywalker at the end of Return of the Jedi.
“He’s a really sweet, low-key guy. He was pretty happy about being there after all this time. It had a lot of meaning for him,” Ramsey said.
A Monumental Reunion
Considering everything that had happened since Ahsoka and Anakain last saw each other, Ramsey wanted to get across just how emotional the reunion was for both characters. For Anakim, he suggested Christensen act like he was seeing his daughter for the first time in years.
“We just talked about what it’s like for him to be seeing Ahsoka after all this time, that it’s a reunion for them. And I just told him, ‘It’s like you haven’t seen your daughter in two years. She’d gone off to college and you’re seeing her again and she’s like a different person but still your daughter.'”
For Ahsoka on the other hand, seeing Anakin transformed her back into being a Padawan during the Clone Wars.
“On the Rosario side of it, she knew what it meant in the story and it was just about selling the idea that she was waking up somewhere really having no clue as to what was going on, not understanding ‘Am I dead? Am I alive? Am I where I think I could be?’ And the way that expression changes at the very end when she sees him and says his name is so sweet and it was just like her turning back the person she was the last time she saw him,” Ramsey explained.
Is Everything As It Seems?
Anakin and Ahsoka’s meeting in the World Between Worlds was left ambiguous at the end of the episode.
Some fans have theorized that Anakin saved Ahsoka by pulling her into the etherial world, or that the Jedi will somehow finish his former Padawan’s training.
Others meanwhile, have pointed to the fact that the Imperial March played as the episode ended, leading them to conclude that everything is not as it seems.
Fortunately, we won’t have to wait long to find out an answer. Episode 5 of Ahsoka will hit Disney+ tonight at 9:00 p.m. ET.
