Welcome back to our magical journey through the history of The Walt Disney Company. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- September 5.
September 5th was a massive day in Disney’s history, with the release of the first-ever Oswald cartoon, the end of a run on Broadway, and also the closure of a Disney California Adventure land.
Trolley Troubles Released (1927)
On this day in 1927, Trolley Troubles was released.
The first Oswald the Lucky Rabbit cartoon, Trolley Troubles was animated by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks.
The Chain Gang Released (1930)
On this day in 1930, the Mickey Mouse cartoon The Chain Gang was released.
The cartoon featured the debut of Pluto, who appears as one of the hounds chasing Mickey.
Disneyland Art Corner Opens (1955)
On this day in 1955, the Disneyland Art Corner opened in its new Tomorrowland location.
The souvenir store originally opened in a temporary location just outside the hub.
Disneyland’s Flying Saucers Closes (1966)
On this day in 1966, Disneyland’s Flying Saucers attraction closed in Tomorrowland.
The Flying Saucers were plagued by operational issues that made the attraction unreliable.
Yale Gracey Passes Away (1983)
On this day in 1983, Disney Legend Yale Gracey was tragically killed at the age of 73.
Gracey was senselessly killed by an unknown transient while sleeping in his own home. The legendary Imagineer created some of Disney’s most famous illusions including many of the ghosts in the Haunted Mansion and the burning town scene in Pirates of the Caribbean.
Michael Eisner Is Told He Will Be Disney’s Next CEO (1984)
On this day in 1984, Ray Watson, Chairman of Walt Disney Productions, informed Michael Eisner that he would recommend him as the new CEO of Disney.
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Closes (1994)
On this day in 1994, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea “temporarily closed” at Walt Disney World.
An opening day attraction 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea took guests on an underwater adventure based on the 1954 Disney film. Although Disney said the attraction was temporarily closing, it would never reopen.
Rocket Rods Closes (2000)
On this day in 2000, Rocket Rods closed at Disneyland.
The highspeed version of the WEDWay PeopleMover had only opened in May 1998.
Disney’s Aida Ends Broadway Run (2004)
On this day in 2004, Disney’s Aida closed on Broadway.
The show ran for 4 1/2 years and 1,852 performances.
Guardians of the Galaxy Premieres (2015)
On this day in 2015, the animated series Guardians of the Galaxy premiered on Disney XD.
Produced by Marvel Animation, the new series followed the adventures of Star-Lord and the other Guardians.
Disneyland’s 60th Anniversary Ends (2016)
On this day in 2016, Disneyland’s 60th anniversary came to an end.
The festivities kicked off on July 17, 2015.
The Jungle Book: Alive With Magic Ends (2016)
Also on this day in 2016, The Jungle Book: Alive with Magic was performed for the final time at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
The show was a temporary nighttime spectacular performed on the Discovery River.
A Bug’s Land Closes (2018)
Finally, on this day in 2018, A Bug’s Land closed at Disney California Adventure.
The land opened with the rest of the park in 2001, and featured the popular Flik’s Flyers and Heimlich’s Chew Chew Train. The land was replaced by Avengers Campus.
