Disney’s ‘Haunted Mansion’ (Finally) Hits Box Office Milestone
The release of Haunted Mansion this summer was objectively a disaster. Despite the fact that the film would have been a more natural fit for the Halloween season, Disney chose to release Mansion on July 28.
The unfortunate release date was compounded by the fact that the film was released the weekend after Barbie and Oppenheimer took the box office by storm, shattering records left and right. The weekend of the film’s release, Mansion was barely even a footnote as “Barbenheimer” continued to dominate movie theaters.
Additionally, Haunted Mansion was the first major release after the advent of the SAG-AFTRA strike, meaning the film’s star-studded cast could not attend its premiere or promote the movie in any fashion. With a cast that boasted LaKeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Owen Wilson, Danny DeVito, Rosario Dawson, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Jared Leto, this was a big loss.
All of these circumstances conspired to make Haunted Mansion a box office bomb. Despite average reviews, the film opened to just $24.3 million and was quickly forgotten.
‘Haunted Mansion’ Scares Up $100 Million
While Haunted Mansion may have been dead on arrival in North America, the film has done surprisingly well overseas.
The film was finally released in Japan this weekend and topped the box office there. Additionally, Mansion posted strong results in the United Kingdom and France.
Buoyed by these markets, Haunted Mansion has finally crossed the $100 million mark, six weeks after its initial release. Of that total, $36 million has come from international markets.
While that number is surely disappointing for a film that had a $157 million budget, there may still be hope.
Although Mansion likely won’t recoup its budget, the film should hit Disney+ just as the Halloween season gets into full swing. If the film can prove to be a hit on Disney+ and a perennial Halloween favorite, Disney may still consider Haunted Mansion a success. Perhaps, the film will find the success on streaming that eluded it at the box office.
