Disney Breaks Ground On Third Shanghai Hotel
Disney broke ground on its third hotel in the Shanghai Disney Resort yesterday on the shores of the resort’s Wishing Star Lake.
Once completed, the yet-unnamed hotel will provide 400 rooms and offer a view of Shanghai Disneyland. The new hotel will join the 420-room Shanghai Disneyland Hotel and the 795-room Toy Story Hotel on the Shanghai Disney Resort property.
“The new hotel will immerse guests in spaces and activities which showcase Disney characters and stories, introduce new dining, shopping, and entertainment experiences, and provide more options for guests planning multi-day visits to the resort,” the resort said.
While the exact theme of the new hotel remains a mystery, the new lodging will follow the resort’s principle of being “authentically Disney and distinctly Chinese. Additionally, the new resort will feature elements of Disney storytelling and whimsy along with Shanghai’s unique architectural legacy of the early 1990s.
US Commerce Secretary Lauds Disney
Groundbreaking on the latest Shanghai Disney Resort hotel came at the end of a four-day visit by US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo.
The American diplomat described Disney as “a gorgeous US brand” and noted that the new hotel was an example of “American soft power.”
Due to the country’s zero-COVID approach over the past three years, Disney has struggled in China. Last year, the resort was shut down three separate times due to COVID regulations.
Now, with the country having lifted all COVID-19 restrictions, and Shanghai authorities ramping up efforts to promote tourism, Disney looks to be back on track.
