“Hero Worship” Will Be at the Heart of ‘The Marvels’
While the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film, The Marvels, will introduce a new Kree antagonist, Zawe Ahston’s Dar-Benn, the real conflict at the heart of the film will be between its three leads.
The next entry in the MCU canon will see Carol Danvers, Kamala Kahn, and Monica Rambea reluctantly team up to become the franchise’s latest team.
Meeting Your Heroes
Specifically, however, according to The Marvels producer Mary Livanos, the film will explore the hero worship between Kamala Khan and Carol Danvers.
“We all are prone to fall into similar trappings when it comes to hero worship. You think that heroes can fix any problem,” the producer explained. “But in this movie, we actually examine how sometimes decisions you make in an attempt to make things better can sometimes make things worse, and have a cascading effect that spirals out of your control.”
A New Dynamic
Livanos believes that the relationship between Khan and Danvers is something akin to that of Kate Bishop and Clint Barton in the Disney+ series Hawkeye.
“So, while we’re seeing Carol Danvers grapple with what has become of her actions, we see that also processed through the eyes of Ms. Marvel. We actually experience forgiveness through the eyes of another person. That can be freeing for the person who might not be able to forgive themselves.”
Ahead of the film’s release, Brie Larson has discussed how Captain Marvel will have to learn to let some of her burden go. It is a feeling she can relate to.
“I understand that feeling of being afraid to let go of control, of being afraid of passing on responsibility to others,” says Larson. “You almost want to take on all of the burden yourself. So, I think this is an incredible metaphor for learning how to be in a team. It’s a very clear example that no one person can do it all. You need all kinds of skill sets, all kinds of people with different viewpoints and different backgrounds in order to save the world.”
When Will ‘The Marvels’ Be Released?
Fans will get a chance to see how the dynamic between Carol Danvers, Kamala Khan, and Monica Rambeou plays out on November 10, 2023.
Although Hollywood remains on strike, The Marvels is still expected to hit its release date.
