A Look Back at the Discovery River Boats of Disney’s Animal Kingdom
One of Animal Kingdom’s former attractions, the Discovery River Boats, created a serene experience for park-goers. In this article, we’ll take a journey back in time to explore the now-extinct attraction of the Discovery River Boats at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom opened its gates in 1998. It introduced guests to a world of animal encounters, thrilling rides, and immersive environments.

One of the original attractions was the Discovery River Boats, a leisurely boat ride that meandered through various themed areas. It provided a serene and picturesque way to explore the park.

The Discovery River Boats attraction allowed visitors to embark on a journey across the waterways of Animal Kingdom.

Some of the sites guests would see on their journey included water sculptures, a unicorn, an animatronic Iguanodon, and a dragon’s cave.

The unicorn and dragon’s cave were a glimpse into the planned land of Beastly Kingdom where Pandora – The World of Avatar now resides. The animatronic Iguanodon was a nod to the movie Dinosaur that Disney would release in 2000.

Guests, however, became disinterested in the ride not long after its opening. Disney attempted to revive guest’s interest with different ideas including Radio Disney DJ sets during the ride.

Unfortunately, it was not enough to save the attraction and the Discovery River Boats closed in August of 1999, only a little over a year after the park’s opening.

Although the attraction itself is gone, there are some elements from the ride that still remain in the park today. One example of this is a loading platform that can still be found along the Discovery River.

You could say that elements from the attraction have influenced new entertainment offerings within Disney’s Animal Kingdom. For example, you can still see boats gliding down the river carrying some of your favorite Disney pals.
The attraction provided a unique way to slow down and appreciate the park’s tranquility. For those who had the opportunity to experience the Discovery River Boats, memories of the leisurely boat ride will be well cherished for years to come.
