Five Must-Try Disney Coasters For Kids
National Roller Coaster Day is on Wednesday (August 16, 2023) and we thought we’d mark the occasion with a look at some of our favorite kid-friendly coasters at Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort. Here’s a look at our list of top 5 coasters for kids under 40 inches who are hoping to have their first-time roller coaster experience at Disney!
1. The Barnstormer at Magic Kingdom Park
Height Requirement: 35 Inches
We’ll kick things off at Magic Kingdom where you’ll find The Barnstormer Featuring the Great Goofini in Storybook Circus near Dumbo the Flying Elephant. This is an adorable open-air environment where kids and aspiring pilots of all ages can soar over the bright big-top tens of Storybook Circus!

This carnival-like atmosphere surrounded by kid-friendly attractions makes this the perfect location for a first-time roller coaster experience.
2. Chip ‘n’ Dale’s GADGETcoaster at Disneyland Park
Height Requirement: 35 Inches
Next, it’s over to the West Coast for one of Disney’s newest coasters. Again, GADGETcoaster is an open-air roller coaster that can be great for tiny tots. It also includes a fun Chip ‘n’ Dale theme. Visitors of all ages will enjoy zipping around Mickey’s Toontown in an acorn created by Gadget Hackwrench from the Disney animated series Chip ‘n’ Dale Rescue Rangers.”

3. Slinky Dog Dash at Disney’s Hollywood Studios
Height Requirement: 38 Inches
Next, it’s over to Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World where you can climb aboard one of Andy’s beloved toys in Slinky Dog Dash. This coaster is definitely more suited for guests not afraid of a hill or two as you zip around Andy’s backyard.

4. Seven Dwarfs Mine Train at Magic Kingdom Park
Height Requirement: 38
Walt Disney World is the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train in Fantasyland at the Magic Kingdom Park. Get ready for a big Heigh Ho! on this thrill ride that will send you zipping around Fantasyland combined with some magical scenes from the films. My favorite moment is the dark mine shaft with glittering jewels and the Seven Dwarfs.
5. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Disneyland Park & Magic Kingdom Park
Height Requirement: 40
Rounding out our list is an attraction that you can enjoy at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World. It’s Big Thunder Mountain! Get ready to swing and sway your way around the tracks at high speeds. Because of the sharp twists and turns the height requirement is a little higher so take note if visiting with small children.
You can check out the ride-along video from Magic Kingdom Park above to experience it virtually before heading to the parks.
