‘The Marvels’ Will Be Kept Out of IMAX By ‘Dune: Part Two’
Following the box-office success of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Marvel is looking to keep the good times rolling with November’s The Marvels.
A sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel, the film will see Carol Danvers team up with fellow heroes Ms. Marvel and Monica Rambeau to form an unlikely super team.

While Captain Marvel became the first female-led superhero film to cross the $1 billion mark, The Marvels’ quest for that mark may already be in danger.
The Marvels Will Not Be Shown In IMAX
Although box office projections have yet to start coming, bad news has already come through. On the company’s lastest earnings call, IMAX Chief Executive Officer Michael Gelfond revealed that The Marvels will not be shown in IMAX.

As it turns out, the decision had nothing to do with the quality of the film, but instead was the result of IMAX giving Dune: Part Two an extended run.
Getting a film into IMAX theaters has been a priority for studios, in a box office environment that has grown increasingly competitive.
Directors Who Use IMAX Cameras Get Priority
For example, Oppenheimer was recently given a three-week IMAX run, which meant that Barbie was shut out from the high-tech theaters.

Christopher Nolan, who directed Oppenheimer, uses IMAX cameras when filming his movies, which typically leads to a two-week exclusive window.
Like Nolan, Denis Villeneuve (who is directing Dune: Part Two) uses IMAX cameras, giving the film the inside track in theaters.

“In a situation where there’s an unavoidable conflict,” Gelfond says, “we’ll look at a number of factors. How the franchise has performed before, visuals, and our relationship to the filmmaker.”
‘The Marvels’ Still Has A Chance
While it looks like The Marvels will be shut out from IMAX theaters, it is not impossible that the film could still swoop in.
Rumors are swirling that Warner Brothers may choose to delay Dune: Part Two. If that happens, IMAX would then turn to The Marvels to fill its theaters.

“Right. Dune, specifically, I mean, there’s another great movie coming out around [that] time, which is The Marvels from Marvel, and we can’t play it because we are committed to Dune. So, Dune moves will just go over to The Marvels. And having a Marvel movie as a backup is not the worst position to be in the world,” Gelfond told investors.
If The Marvels wants to soar as high as Captain Marvel did in 2019, it is likely going to need access to IMAX. The theaters bring in more revenue than traditional screens. In fact, IMAX can account for as much as 30-40% of overall box office returns, despite the fact that they make up 900 screens throughout the country.

Now, all Marvel can do is watch and hope. If the studio wants IMAX access for The Marvels, it is going to need Dune out of the way.
