Exciting Things to Expect from San Fransokyo at Disney California Adventure
If you’ve been following along with MickeyBlog, you’ll know that San Fransokyo will be opening at Disney California Adventure on August 31st. The new themed area (formerly Pacific Wharf) will provide guests with stunning multicultural food, landmarks inspired by San Francisco and Tokyo, and merchandise.
The entire area was inspired by Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Academy Award Winning film Big Hero 6. Guests will find references to the film and TV show Big Hero 6 The Series and Baymax throughout the new San Fransokyo area. Here are some of the incredible details and businesses to be on the lookout for!
Landmarks
The Pacific Wharf has been transformed into San Fransokyo Square. The Ghirardelli Soda Fountain and Chocolate Shop still remains. However, the shop will be getting an upgrade that includes a koi fish turbine (which powers San Fransokyo in the film) and new lanterns will be hung outside.
Ghirardelli will also feature some awesome artwork including an animated mural that showcases the daily life of San Fransokyo.
Guests will also want to be on the lookout for the 54-foot San Fransokyo Gate Bridge which is intended to serve as the gateway to the neighborhood.
Soundtrack
Guests in the area will hear music specific to San Fransokyo. Inspiration was found from 2014-era J-pop songs along with a loop of music from the Japan Pavilion at EPCOT. In addition, four songs from The Happy Ride with Baymax at Tokyo Disneyland were also added to the soundtrack, along with contemporary J-pop songs. If you are in the land for 90 minutes, you will hear the entire soundtrack loop.
Another touch taken from Big Hero 6 is the Port of San Fransokyo sign that guests will see upon entering. It appears in bold neon letters that harken back to the opening sequence of the film.
The Port of San Fransokyo Cerveceria will serve as a perfect quick service spot offering draft beverages, seltzers, and Garlic Pinwheel Chips Mix.
Another spot that’s sure to be a fan favorite is the Hamanda Bot Shop. Hiro and Baymax will be on hand to meet guests at this location! Near the shop, you’ll also want to be on the lookout for signage for Good Luck Alley. This is a Big Hero 6 Easter Egg as fans of the film will know it as the gambling den where robot makers bring their creations to compete against one another.
Also near the Hamada Bot Shop is the San Fransokyo Makers Market. This is where defeated battle bots are picked apart and used as parts for new creations. The shop will also sell an awesome array of merchandise.
Merchandise
Speaking of merchandise, noteworthy items to pick up at the Maker’s Market includes a white adult tee featuring a black outline of Baymas, a red children’s t-shirt featuring Baymax covered in red bandages, and a black ball cap featuring Baymax along with Mochi the cat!
Also be on the lookout for phone cases, AirPod cases, Apple Watch Straps, Baymax plush toys, magnets, and more! The premises will also feature a vending machine that will offer four different collectible medallion designs that you’ll want to collect. They feature Baymax, Wind Turbines, the San Fransokyo Gate Bridge, and one that features Baymax, the San Fransokyo Logo, and kanjis that represent knowledge and courage.
Food
Aunt Cass Café
Aunt Cass Cafe will be the place to go for signature Bay Area dishes like the bread bowl clam chowder. The chowder will have miso added to it to give it a subtle umami flavor. Another noteworthy dish is the curry with rice, green onion, and pickled ginger.
Those looking for a light bite will want to pick up the Soba Noodle Salad which comes with tofu, cabbage, edamame, carrots, roasted corn, scallions, and cilantro topped with crispy shallots and sesame ginger dressing.
The noodles pair perfectly with the Honey Lemon-Ade with yuzu purée and popping passion fruit and strawberry boba. For dessert, Aunt Cass will also offer a fluffy Japanese-style cheesecake with a cherry compote.
Lucky Fortune Cookery
Lucky Fortune Cookery features a multicultural menu of Vietnamese, Korean, Chinese, and Japanese flavors. A Yaki Udon will be available, which is similar to Yakitori but served with thick udon noodles. Another favorite is sure to be the Karaage-inspired Crispy Chicken Sandwich with slaw and Togarashi mayonnaise will also be available on a potato bun, along with garlic chips.
Inspired by Cocina Cucamonga Mexican Grill’s braised beef, there will also be a twist on ramen that includes birria beef, mozzarella cheese, a soft-boiled egg, and roasted corn. You can wash down all of these delicious treats with an unsweetened black iced tea infused with flavor from lychee syrup and lychee coconut jelly.
There’s even a Baymax-themed treat! How adorable is this white macaron filled with buttercream and a hazelnut filling!?
Cocina Cucamonga Mexican Grill
Our next culinary stop at San Fransokyo is Cocina Cucamonga which added some Japanese flair to its Mexican street corn. The corn will be topped with Togarashi mayonnaise, queso fresco, furikake, and bonito flakes! It will also be served with wheat chicharrones.
Rita’s Turbine Blenders
In a nod to GoGo Tomago, another snack spot, Rita’s Turbine Blenders will be serving up non-alcoholic drinks complete with jelly rings!
Food for Children
Though we’re firm believes that children oftentimes enjoy eating what the adults around them are eating some restaurants in San Fransokoyo will have a kids menu with smaller portions.
