This Day in Disney History- July 5
Welcome back to our continuing journey through Disney history. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- July 5.
July 5th was a slower day in Disney history, but it still featured the opening of an EPCOT Center attraction, the premiere of a Disney’s Hollywood Studios show, and the loss of a Disney Legend. So, let’s get going!
Napoleon and Samantha Released (1972)
On this day in 1972, Disney released Napoleon and Samantha.
The film starred Michael Douglas, Will Geer and Jodie Foster, and told the story of two young children and a pet lion who go on a mountain trek.
Hot Lead and Cold Feet Released (1978)
On this day in 1978, Hot Lead and Cold Feet was released.
The film told the story of a tough father who is set on taking control of a small western town with his twin songs- one of whom is a gunfighter and the other a coward.
Maelstrom Opens (1988)
On this day in 1988, Maelstrom opened in EPCOT Center.
Located in the Norway pavilion, EPCOT Center’s first “thrill ride” took guests on a mystical tour of Norway complete with trolls, vikings, and polar bears.
The Spirit of Mickey Released (1998)
On this day in 1998, the Mickey Mouse cartoon The Spirit of Mickey was released.
The special featured a look back at some of Mickey’s most memorable cartoons including The Band Concert, Mickey’s Surprise Party, and Mickey and the Seal
Disney Announces Removal of Spaceship Earth Wand (2007)
On this day in 2007, Disney announced that the Mickey Mouse arm and wand logo atop Spaceship Earth would be removed.
The structure had adorned EPCOT’s iconic sphere since the Millennium Celebration in 2000.
For the First Time in Forever: A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration Premiered (2014)
On this day in 2014, For the First Time in Forever: A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration premiered at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
The musical show was based on the 2013 animated film Frozen, and would eventually move to the Hyperion Theater in Echo Lake.
Blaine Gibson Passes Away (2015)
On this day in 2015, Disney Legend Blaine Gibson passed away at age 97.
Gibson created hundreds of sculptures from which Audio-Animatronic figures were produced. Among the characters he created were the Pirates of the Caribbean Animatronics, Mr. Lincoln and the United States Presidents in the Hall of Presidents, and the Haunted Mansion characters.
Gibson also designed the Partners Statue, which can be found in hub of the Magic Kingdom, Disneyland, and Tokyo Disneyland.
