Princess Leia Dress From ‘A New Hope’ Fails To Sell At Auction
A gown worn by Princess Leia (portrayed by Carrie Fisher) in Star Wars: A New Hope went up for auction at this week’s Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction.
The gown had been expected to sell for as much as $2 million, but things did not go as planned.

Instead, the dress went unsold, after bidders failed to meet the seller’s minimum sale price. The owners required the gown to sell for at least $1 million, while bidders went as high as $975,000.
Still Accepting Offers
Propstore, the company behind the auction, said it is still actively accepting post-auction offers for the dress.
“It may be sold after the auction in a private-treaty sale. Or may be re-offered again in a future auction,” the company said in a statement to NPR.

The iconic Princess Leia dress is believed to be the only surviving Princess Leia costume from the film that launched a franchise.
An Iconic Piece
The dress in question can be seen in the film’s final scene when Princess Leia presented medals of honor to Han Solo and Luke Skywalker.
“The dress is a real relic. It’s an absolute piece of film history,” said Brandon Alinger, the chief operating officer of Propstore.

“When Star Wars fans see it, they stop in their tracks, they gasp a bit at the sight of it, because they recognize the significance of it.”
A Storied History
Referred to as Princess Leia’s ceremonial gown, the floor-sweeping gown is made of slim-fitting silk and adorned with a single silver-plated belt.
The dress, which was long thought to be gone, was taken from the set and stored in an attic.

A crew member had taken the dress and stored it in a London attic, where it sat collecting dust.
“It was 10 or 12 years ago that we first became aware of the piece,” Alinger added. “It was such a moment when we first learned of this and then, ultimately, when the Star Wars fandom learned that this piece still existed.”
Due to the expected price of the gown, the piece may end up in a display collection.
