Princess Leia’s Iconic White Gown Is Going Up For Auction
One of the most iconic costumes in the history of cinema is coming up for action this month.
The white dress that Carrie Fisher wore as Princess Leia in Star Wars: A New Hope is being auctioned off through Propstore Auction House later this month.
A Piece of Star Wars History
Described as the “Matched Ceremonial Dress Cosume,” the gown was worn by Fisher at the conclusion of A New Hope. The dress is made of lightweight cream silk fabric and features a hidden zipper along its side and a hook-and-eye fastener on the shoulder.
The piece is believed to be the only Leia costume still in existence from the original film.
For the greater part of the last 45 years, the dress was lying balled up in a plastic bag in a Longdon home. It was briefly worn at a party, where it ripped and had food, wine, and blood spilled on it.
A Long And Storied History
The gown had been kept by a member of the British crew as a memento.
“Collectors had been searching for nearly 40 years and everyone had come to the conclusion that it didn’t exist anymore. No one had found any Princess Leia costumes,” props collector Stephen Lane told The New York Post.
“But then I went to meet this former crew member and hanging on the back of a door in his office was this ratty old plastic bag — and balled up in the bottom of the plastic bag was the dress. It was in a really poor condition but instantly recognizable. Partly because of the belt.”
“It all came out grubby and torn, but it was also astonishing because it was clear that it was the real thing.”
Ready For Auction
Now fully restored, the iconic gown is ready for auction.
“When I was first told about the dress, I simply couldn’t believe it,” Lane said. “I’ve been collecting for 30 years and I think it’s one of the most exciting finds of my career.”
The iconic Star Wars dress is expected to fetch between $1 million and $2 million, although it could go for more than that.
The most expensive movie dress ever sold was Marilyn Monroe’s white subway grate dress from 1955’s The Seven Year Itch. While the Leia dress will likely not sell for that much, crazier things have happened.
