Welcome back to our continuing trip through The Walt Disney Company’s past. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- July 2.
July 2nd was a big day for The Walt Disney Company, with the opening of a new Tomorrowland in Disneyland, the release of an animated film, and return of Captain EO. So, lets get started!
The Rainbow Caverns Mine Train Opens (1956)
On this day in 1956, the Rainbow Caverns Mine Train attraction opened in Disneyland.
Located in Disneyland’s new Living Desert, the attraction would eventually be upgraded to become the Mine Train Through Nature’s Wonderland.
The Moon-Spinners Premieres (1964)
On this day in 1964, The Moon-Spinners premiered.
Based on the novel by Mary Stewart, the film told the story of an English woman her her niece, who stumble into intrigue while on vacation in Greece.
A New Tomorrowland Opens In Disneyland (1967)
On this day in 1967, Disneyland’s Rocket Jets, Flight to the Moon, PeopleMover, Carousel of Progress, and the Tomorrowland Terrace restaurant all opened.
The attractions opened as part of Disneyland’s overhaul of Tomorrowland. Rocket Jets and the PeopleMover were located in the Tomorrowland plaza area, while Flight to the Moon was an updated version of Rocket to the Moon.
Following its sucess at the 1964 World’s Fair, the Carousel of Progress made the move to Disneyland where it was still sponsored by General Electric.
If You Had Wings Dedicated (1972)
On this day in 1972, If You Had Wings was officially dedicated at Walt Disney World.
The Tomorrowland attraction, which was sponsored by Eastern Airlines, took guests to various vacation destinations.
The Great Mouse Detective Released (1986)
On this day in 1986, The Great Mouse Detective was released.
Based on children’s book series Basil of Baker Street, the film followed the adventures of Basil, a brilliant mouse detective who embarks on the greatest case of his career.
Aladdin’s Oasis Opens (1993)
On this day in 1993, Aladdin’s Oasis opened in Disneyland’s Adventureland.
At the outdoor restaurant, guests could see characters from Disney’s animated feature film Aladdin.
America’s Heart and Soul Released (2004)
On this day in 2004, America’s Heart and Soul was released.
The documentary took viewers on a road trip across the United States.
Captain EO Returns to EPCOT (2010)
On this day in 2010, Captain EO returned to EPCOT.
The 3D show was brought back 16 years after it initially closed in tribute to the recently deceased Michael Jackson.
The Coca-Cola Store Orlando Opens (2016)
On this day in 2016, the Coca-Cola Store Orlando opened in Disney Springs.
The building was modeled after a 1920s bottling plant.
DisneyQuest Closes (2017)
On this day in 2017, DisneyQuest permanently closed at Walt Disney World.
Originally opening on June 19, 1998, the indoor interactive theme park was replaced by The NBA Experience.
Hong Kong Disneyland Celebrates 15th Anniversary (2021)
Finally, on this day in 2021, Hong Kong Disneyland began its 15 anniversary celebration.
