Annie Mumolo Gives Update On “Cinderella” Spin-Off
Over two years ago, it was announced that Bridesmaids co-writers Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo would be writing a Disney live-action musical comedy centering on the evil stepsisters Anastasia and Drizella from Cinderella.
Since that time, however, news on the project has been scarce.
“Sometimes You Get Fired”
At Monday night’s premiere of Joy Ride, Mumolo finally gave an update on the status of the picture.
“Well, you know, sometimes you get fired,” Mumolo quipped. She then clarified that the two screenwriters were “currently on hold” while another writer takes a shot at the story.
“We definitely worked on it. We got pretty far into the process and then we have a few drafts and now there’s somebody else working on it.”
According to Mumolo, the film would have been “almost like a Les Mis meets Disney kind of a vibe the way we did it.” She went on to explain, “I actually would love to see that movie make it. It’s very hard to get something through, it’s really hard to get movies through right now especially. It would be amazing.”
Up To Disney
Although Disney has not publically commented on the status of the Cinderella spin-off, Mumolo notes that the fate of the film is ultimately in the studio’s hands.
“They’re very protective of the property and I respect that. We trust whatever decisions, we’re like OK, well, let’s see,” Mumolo added. “They have incredible music people that they’re always working with. Disney is Disney so you just kind of do whatever they say.”
While fans will obviously be upset to hear that Mumolo and Wiig are not currently working on the project, for now at least, it sounds as if the film they helped launch is still in development.
