Pixar’s ‘Elemental’ Tops DC’s ‘The Flash’ At Mid-Week Box Office
In a midweek upset, both Pixar’s Elemental and Sony’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse topped The Flash on Wednesday.
Both The Flash and Elemental opened over the June 16-18 weekend to poor results. The former brought home $55 million over three days, which was far below expectations.
The Warner Bros. tentpole could not even match the $67 million gross of Black Adam last year. That film was considered a major disappointment.
Elemental, on the other hand, opened to an even worse $29.6 million, which was the lowest three-day start in Pixar’s history (adjusting 1995’s Toy Story return for inflation).
For Pixar, the silver lining has been the audiences’ reaction to the film. Elemental currently boats an “A” CinemaScore and strong PostTrak exits.
Disney and Pixar are hoping that solid word-of-mouth will propel the film to a strong second weekend, and perhaps an extended run.
Mid-Week Returns
While neither film launched the way that the studios were hoping for, the fact that Elemental brought in $3.5 million to The Flash‘s $3.1 million is a good sign for Disney.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, meanwhile, is an undeniable box-office success, bringing its domestic tally to $249 million.
The sequel to 2018’s Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, has been a juggernaut since its release.
