Disney Gives a Sneak Peek of ‘Wish’ At Annecy
Disney capped off the Annecy Animation Festival by showcasing 20 minutes of unfinished footage of their upcoming animated musical “Wish”.
The film, which is slated for release in November, will help commemorate Disney’s 100th anniversary. As such, the film was inspired by Disney’s classic animated films. Specifically, the creative team took inspiration from DIsney’s 1959 “Sleeping Beauty”.
When imagining Asha’s family home, production designer Lisa Keene took direct inspiration from concept paintings by Gustaf Tenngren and Kay Neilsen, two artists who helped develop the studio’s aesthetic in the 1940s.
A Sneak Peek At Wish
In the clip shown at Annecy, we encounter a determined teenager during her interview for the esteemed role of sorcerer’s apprentice under the reign of Magnifico, a supposedly benevolent magician who governs the Kingdom of Rosas. This realm thrives on wishes made by its inhabitants, which Magnifico safeguards and fulfills.
However, Asha’s interview takes an unexpected turn. She inadvertently dislodges the radiant crystal orb containing the heartfelt wish of her 100-year-old grandfather.
Desperately pleading with the ruler to grant it, Asha is met with disappointment. Unveiling his true nature, Magnifico reveals that he maintains his royal authority by amassing wishes and engaging in a self-serving act of hoarding.
Filled with disillusionment, the courageous protagonist returns home. There, she realizes that she no longer fits into her previous life. Having gained insight into the deceptive facade that governs her land, she wants to escape.
Overwhelmed by her emotions, she bursts into a heartfelt song. In the poignant “I Want” anthem, she gazes upon familiar sights with a newfound sense of disappointment. The refrain echoes her fervent desire, “So I make this wish, to have something more for us than this,”. As the song reaches its apex a star illuminates the night sky around her.
Coming To Theaters
“Wish” will arrive in theaters on November 20, 2023. I for one, can’t wait to see what Disney does with the film!
