Disney Requested Lawsuit Dismissal of DeSantis’ “Reedy Creek” Board of Supervisors
On Tuesday, Disney officials requested a lawsuit dismissal for the one filed by the “Reedy Creek” Board of Supervisors. If you’ve been away from the Disney bubble for a while, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis handpicked a new board for the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District after revoking Disney’s longstanding self-oversite.
This asinine new board is essentially a DeSantis/state-led version of what used to be known as the Reedy Creek Improvement District (RCID, or Reedy Creek as it shall continue to be called), but without Disney calling the shots.
Disney asked the court to dismiss the lawsuit filed by this new board because they were filing to void all of Disney’s Development Deals.
Why did Disney ask for a Dismissal?
…because DeSantis signed a bill that voided all of Disney’s Development Deals. So he carried out the will of the new board of supervisors instead of waiting for things to play out in court. I’m sure Disney is maneuvering to better situate themselves for a win in federal court.
Side note: most of my legal analysis experience comes from reading John Grisham books, so take all of this with knowledge that I’m NOT anywhere close to a lawyer.
Disney is Taking it to the Feds
Disney filed a federal lawsuit essentially claiming DeSantis is on a retribution rampage against Disney for expressing dissent of the Florida Parental Rights in Education Bill (HB 1557, commonly referred to as the Don’t Say Gay bill) that limits discussion of or instruction about sexual orientation and gender identity in kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade classrooms.
Gone are the days of staying neutral on any topic unfortunately. I lament that Disney didn’t just stay silent regarding the bill and let their Cast Members speak out about it ask they wished without an official stance from The Walt Disney Company.
DeSantis has also taken this too far. Disney brings in BILLIONS in tax revenue for the state of Florida. The Governor should just let Disney focus on milking the cash cow instead of sending their lawyers to federal court. He’d have a lot less heartache.
If only the two sides could draw a truce.
A Drawn Out Feud
The aforementioned Reedy Creek Improvement District allowed Disney to self-govern without involving local and state government in their building and usage plans within Reedy Creek. Basically, it cut the red tape and let the magic flow since before Walt Disney World opened in 1971.
This drawn out war has now means Disney requested lawsuit dismissal to take their battles to higher courts. DeSantis fortified the nullification that the Board sued Disney about… so they are taking their next legal step.
