This Day in Disney History- April 3
Welcome back to our continuing trip through the history of the Walt Disney Company. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- April 3.
April 3rd was a slower day in Disney history, but we still had the airing of a Disney special, a closure at Disneyland, and the opening of a new land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios!
Midget Autopia Closes (1966)
On this day in 1966, the Midget Autopia closed in Disneyland.
The attraction originally opened in 1957, as a small version of the popular Autopia attraction. Following its Disneyland closure, Walt donated the Midget Autopia to his boyhood home of Marceline, Missouri.
Monsanto Presents Walt Disney’s America on Parade Airs (1976)
On this day in 1976, the television special Monsanto Night Presents Walt Disney’s America on Parade aired.
The special was hosted by Red Skeleton and showed audiences Disney’s America on Parade, a special Bicentennial parade.
Frank Wells Passes Away (1994)
On this day in 1994, Frank Wells passed away.
Disney’s present and Chief Operating Officer, Wells was killed in a helicopter crash. He was 62. Wels, along with Michael Eisner, was responsible for during Disney around during the 1980s.
102 Dalmatians Hits Home Video (2001)
On this day in 2001, Disney released 102 Dalmatians on home video.
The film was a sequel to the live-action 101 Dalmatians movie starring Glenn Close and Jeff Daniels.
Muppet Courtyard Opens (2016)
On this day in 2016, the newly-named Muppet Courtyard opened in Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
Centered on Muppet Vision 3D, the new mini-land was formally part of the Streets of America.
Three Disneynature Films Debut On Disney + (2020)
On this day in 2020, three Disneynature films made their debut on Disney +. Dolphin Reef, Elephant, and Penguins, all hit the streaming service.
