Pedro Pascal Reflects on His Journey As ‘The Mandalorian’
Pedro Pascal is the undisputed king of Star Wars at this moment. The man behind the mask of Din Jarin’s Mandalorian armor has rocketed to stardom in recent years, partially fueled by the success of The Mandalorian.
While Pascal and The Mandalorian have established themselves firmly in the public consciousness, the actor recently sat down with Starwars.com to reflect on his journey.

“I’m paralyzed at the thought that five years have gone by,” he says jokingly. “And then pretty soon five more. This is a different kind of interview than I was expecting.”
Meeting Jon Favreau
Although a lot has happened to both Pascal and The Mandalorian over the last five years, the actor can still remember his first sit down about the show.

Pedro Pascal is The Mandalorian in the Disney+ series THE MANDALORIAN.
“There was meeting Jon and Dave before I got the job, and being invited into a room [where] every inch of all four walls was covered in story illustrations of the entire first season. That was something that I’ll never forget.”
From there it turns out, things only got more surreal.

“Going over to the set where they were trying to experiment with screen testing different things. Putting on the helmet for the first time in front of [Lucasfilm president] Kathleen Kennedy. No pressure! It fit like glove. And then putting the entire costume on for the first time.”
Introduced For the World
Then, came a suspenseful day in 2019, when Pascal was introduced to the world of The Mandalorian at the 2019 Star Wars Celebration in Chicago.

“Being introduced and hearing the volume of love that came from the audience. All of that was really, really surreal,” he says.
Relationship With Grogu
In the years since that fateful introduction, Din Djarin and his adoptive son Grogu have taken the pop culture world by storm.

Despite how well-established the relationship between Din and Grogu has become, Pascal insists that there is still more to explore.
“As instantly disarming as that relationship is, even through Din Djarin’s initial reluctance, there’s still so much to explore as far as that parent-child dynamic is concerned,” Pascal says, carefully choosing his words so as not to give too much away about the chapters yet to come. “Who’s teaching who? Who is protecting who? Who’s saving who? There will be more of that.”

A Tough Acting Job
As The Mandalorian‘s third season rounds into form, Pascal is once again given the herculean task of portraying a character whose face is covered by a helmet.
Series creators Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have worked with the actor to shape everything about the show, in a way that lets Pascal give Din character, even without being able to use his face.

“The open relationship that I have creatively with Jon and David in terms of going back into a scene and changing the tone, trying to ratchet up the tension or the sentiment. We do all this kind of surgical work,” Pascal says, putting the final touches on the dialogue, proving “the opportunity to pay attention to details or find different ways of discovering subtle ways to make a big move or to have a big impact.”
