“it’s a small world” at Magic Kingdom Celebrates Diversity With New Addition
If you’ve ever ridden “it’s a small world” at Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World, you’ll know that this is a ride that not only has the catchiest song EVER but also celebrates the incredible diversity of our world. Now Disney has taken this one step further by introducing a character on the ride that appears in a wheelchair.
We hopped aboard “it’s a small world” and you can get a first look at the important new addition below!
If you’ve ridden “it’s a small world” at Magic Kingdom, you may have had the chance to meet Jean Collins who works on the ride. Jean first rode the beloved Fantasyland attraction when it debuted back in 1964 at the New York World’s Fair. What made the ride so memorable for Jean was its representation of peace and understanding and its celebration of our differences.
“‘it’s a small world’ is special because so many people are able to see themselves reflected throughout the ride,” Jean says. “Walt would be proud if he could see the attraction today.”
Walt Disney Imagineering is always looking at ways to update the parks and experiences to better reflect the world. Yesterday, the new doll in a wheelchair made its debut at the Magic Kingdom attraction. This continues the vision set forth in the ride to celebrate diversity.
Yesterday, cast members of the ENABLED Business Employee Resource Group, which advocates for accessibility is had a chance to check out the new addition to “it’s a small world.”
“The parks are very special to my family,” Liv, a member of the ENABLED leadership team explains. “My sister Chloe used a wheelchair, so to see a character in such an iconic attraction that puts the spotlight on accessibility makes my heart feel full.”
Though it may seem like a small addition to some, the new “it’s a small world’ doll is about more than one animatronic. This provides a chance for guests and cast members alike to see themselves and their loved ones represented in the ride. Be sure to check out this important new addition during your next visit to Walt Disney World.
